*NEW* Nikon Z8 In Rentals!

We have just received a copy of the new Nikon Z8 full frame mirrorless camera!  One of the most exciting cameras to come out in the past couple of years, Nikon’s done an amazing job with this camera!  Possessing almost all of the features of the one year older Z9, the Z8 gives up very little to its big brother.

Some of the Z8’s features are:

  •  45.7MP stacked CMOS sensor with super fast readout.
  •  20 fps shooting in RAW, 30fps shooting in full resolution jpeg, 120fps shooting in 11MP jpeg.
  •  8K up to 60p video recording, 4K up to 120p. 8 or 10 bit H.265, 10 bit Apple ProRes 4:2:2 HQ, 12 bit in camera ProRes RAW HQ
  •  Shutter speeds as short as an astounding 1/32,000 sec and up to 15 minutes in manual mode.
  •  Subjects recognized by the AF system include people, animals (cats, dogs, birds, etc…) & vehicles (cars, bikes, trains & aircraft).
  •  Two USB C ports!  One for power delivery and the other for tethered shooting.

Some differences include:

  •  Less robust build than the Z9, although the Z8 is very well built.
  •  One CFExpress card slot and one SD card slot vs. the Z9’s two CFExpress slots.
  •  No built in GPS.
  •  Smaller battery than the one in the Z9
  •  Most of the functionality of the Z9 at ¾ the cost.

I have used our rental Z8 quite a lot since receiving it, and I have to say that it is now my favourite camera to use when photographing wildlife. My personal Canon R5 is still better at recognizing the eyes of various animals, but the AF system of the Z8 is much more configurable for different shooting scenarios, and I find it more efficient for some subjects.  For example, the Z8 allows you to customize the height and width of the focus area and still maintain animal eye (and presumably hoo-mans too!) recognition.  Something the Canon cannot do. Also, due to its super fast sensor readout and shutter speeds up to 1/32,00 sec, rolling shutter is non-existent, whereas with the Canon R5, rolling shutter effects can be seen in some cases such as the in the wings of a hummingbird or bee in flight.

$225/Day or Weekend.
