The Favourite Camera Series – Bruce

When asked Bruce Maclellan replied:

1. If you were to choose a favourite film camera from your collection which would it be?

I do have a lot of cameras and usually favour the one that I’m currently using. If I were to choose though I would go to the ones that I use the most. In 35mm that would be the Konica Hexar RF. This camera is a Leica M mount rangefinder camera with auto exposure. It just seems more seamless that you choose the aperture, focus and shoot. The camera takes care of the rest.

In medium format I would pick the Fuji GA 645 W. This camera is so easy that it seems to be effortless. AE and AF, just point it and shoot. Both also have auto film advance and rewind.

2. How long have you owned this camera?

I have had these cameras for over 5 years each.

3. How did you come to own this camera?

Both cameras were acquired used on Ebay. I read many forums and blogs and subsequently bought and sold many of the cameras recommended by many people. Some I thought were fine but just not for me. ie the Olympus XA is recommended by many as a great point and shoot, however I found that it was just too small to be held comfortably in my hands.

4. What things do you enjoy most about this camera?

The ease of use. The reliability of the shutter. The feel of the camera in my hands, it is like an extension of myself. When you don’t have to think about the mechanics of what you are doing, the art comes easier.
